Vaccines & Labs

Which vaccines and lab tests are required for the immigration medical exam?

Straight answers from Dr. Lishan Kassa, MD, a USCIS-designated civil surgeon in Alexandria, VA.

Quick Answer

Requirements depend on your age and vaccination history. We review your records against current CDC requirements, give you a prescription for any missing vaccines to fill at a pharmacy, and give you an order for required lab work at an outside laboratory.

The Details

Vaccines. We compare your records with the CDC list for your age, such as Td/Tdap, polio, MMR, hepatitis B, varicella and influenza. If a vaccine is missing, we write a prescription you can fill at any pharmacy. We do not give vaccines on-site. Some vaccines need multiple doses over time, and your Form I-693 notes any doses still pending. The COVID-19 vaccine is no longer a requirement.

Lab tests. Required tests, including tuberculosis screening, vary by age. We give you an order to complete at Sunrise Medical Laboratories, Labcorp or Quest Diagnostics. No blood is drawn at our office.

Billing. Vaccines and lab tests are billed separately from the exam fee, and your health insurance may cover them.
